OXFORD, England – Macmillan Dictionaries will no longer appear as physical books. The final copies are rolling off the presses at this very moment, and from next year, Macmillan Dictionary will be available only online.
Since its launch in 2009, Macmillan Dictionary Online has seen explosive growth and will now fully replace the print version in a transition that, according to Editor-in-Chief Michael Rundell, can only be a positive one.
With this migration to new media, Rundell believes that Macmillan’s dictionaries have found their ideal medium: “The traditional book format is very limiting for any kind of reference work. Books are out of date as soon as they’re printed, and the space constraints they impose often compromise our goals of clarity and completeness. There is so much more we can do for our users in digital media.”
Macmillan Dictionary Online provides an English dictionary and thesaurus, as well as a popular blog about topical issues such as the use of pleb or omnishambles, a weekly ‘Buzzword’ column on newly-emerging words, and the crowd-sourced ‘Open Dictionary’. Macmillan Dictionary Online also hosts the annual ‘Love English Awards’ and nominations for the 2012 prizes will open in late November.
Rundell emphasises that the move from print to online is a cause for celebration: “While printed dictionaries only get updated every four or five years, Macmillan’s online presence means we can add new words and phrases on a regular basis, reflecting the ever-changing role of English as the lingua franca of science, business, academia and social media.”
“Our research tells us that most people today get their reference information via their computer, tablet, or phone” adds Stephen Bullon, Macmillan Education’s Publisher for Dictionaries, “and the message is clear and unambiguous: the future of the dictionary is digital”.
Notes to Editors
The Macmillan Dictionaries series has won several awards during its lifetime, including the English Speaking Union’s prestigious ‘English Language Book Award’ in 2002, and a British Council ELTon in 2004 for innovation in the field of English Language materials, with its CD-ROM and online editions.
Michael Rundell’s blog post and ‘The Macmillan Dictionary is going places’ video will be available from 5 November. Michael Rundell is available for interviews.

Oxford, England – Macmillan Education is delighted by the news that Simon Greenall has been awarded an OBE for services to English Language Teaching.
Greenall’s royal recognition for his work in ELT was announced in the New Year Honours list on 29th December 2012. On receiving the news, Greenall responded:
“I’m extremely honoured to receive an OBE for services to English language teaching. Obviously, the work I’m most passionate about is publishing and over the past thirty years I’ve had the privilege of working with teachers using our books in countries all over the world.”
As an ELT textbook writer and advisor, Greenall has worked extensively for Macmillan Education. “My great privilege in recent years has been working with Macmillan for the Palestinian Ministry of Education”, says Greenall, “as well as on a series of school and university textbooks used all over China for Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Press in Beijing”.
Apart from his work in publishing, Greenall served as president of IATEFL on the Board of Management of the ELT Journal, and he is now on the Board of Trustees of International House.
Greenall remains characteristically modest about his achievement:
“I’m not sure if I deserve the award, but I’d be happy to accept it to celebrate the work of everyone in our vibrant, exciting profession, which changes the lives of people and their countries in such a benign and positive way.”
Simon Allen, CEO of Macmillan Education, is delighted to hear about Greenall’s appointment:
“Macmillan Education would like to express our sincere thanks for the valuable contribution Simon has made to Macmillan’s publishing direction over many years. His input has led to the success of collaborative projects such as those with our partners the Foreign Language Teaching and Research press in China, right through to his advisory capacity on so many of our worthwhile projects such as English for Palestine. It’s a richly-deserved award.”
Notes to Editors
Simon Greenall is an ELT textbook writer and a past President of IATEFL (1997 - 99). His work for Macmillan Education includes the Reward series, and he is the co-editor in chief of New Standard English, a Junior and Senior High coursebook series for China, and New Standard College English for Chinese universities.
Macmillan Education is one of the world's leading publishers of English Language teaching and school curriculum materials, with 170 years of publishing experience.

Oxford, England – Macmillan Dictionary’s popular BuzzWords column celebrates its 10th anniversary this month. First published in 2003 as weekly online articles, the BuzzWords column was created to identify and capture new words and phrases as they emerged in the English language.
Looking back, Kerry Maxwell, author of the BuzzWord articles, recalls the daunting task of starting BuzzWords 10 years ago:
“I thought the prospect of starting a weekly column about new developments in the English language sounded interesting, but challenging, too. Were there really enough new words out there and where would we find them?”
Soon Maxwell found that there was plenty to write about, and the BuzzWord column grew to become a significant dictionary resource that captured language development, and identified the social and political changes that influenced those changes.
“By recording these changes as they happened”, Maxwell explains, “we’ve managed to keep our finger on the pulse of language change, and made observations at a pace which would have been unthinkable 20 years ago”.
It’s no surprise to anyone that changes in language occur with major developments, but the BuzzWords column has managed to keep track of these changes as and when they happened, capturing future trends in words and phrases, before they became mainstream.
Kerry Maxwell’s full article on 10 years of BuzzWords is available on our blog: www.macmillandictionaryblog.com/happy-10th-birthday-buzzword
